An Unforgettable Week of Art, Laughter, and Connection in the UK Countryside

A few weeks ago we concluded the most incredible art retreat with Ivy Newport, and our hearts (and sketchbooks) are full. Nestled between dramatic landscapes and centuries of history, our week was a beautiful blend of creativity, connection, and inspiration.

We began our journey in Edinburgh, sketching its iconic skyline—steeples and stone silhouetted against the sky—while a street performer strummed his guitar below, setting the perfect atmosphere. From there, we wandered south, following the rhythm of history along Hadrian’s Wall and through storybook villages and misty hills.

One of the highlights was our visit to the Derwent Pencil Museum, where we immersed ourselves in a rainbow of colors and creativity. The shop was a dream come true for every art lover—so many tools and treasures to take home!

We explored medieval castles and found magic at the Castlerigg Stone Circle, standing silently under a brilliant blue sky. As if out of a fairytale, an ice cream truck was parked nearby, and we enjoyed sweet treats in the sun, soaking in the ancient energy of the stones.

In Melrose, a charming market town, we wandered through artisan shops, discovering local crafts and hidden gems. And of course, Rosslyn Chapel left us in awe—its intricate stone carvings and layers of mystery adding another dimension to our creative journey.

Back at our cozy farm estate near Ullswater Lake, we were treated to true rest and joy. With views of peaceful mountains and dramatic skies we practiced new pastel techniques in both landscape and portrait work. The serene surroundings were brought to life by the cheerful soundtrack of birdsong, baa-ing sheep, and even a cuckoo calling in the distance.

Our hearts were warmed not just by the scenery and sketching, but by the incredible hospitality—endless cups of coffee and tea, delicious food, and flowing wine, all thanks to the wonderful Michael. Betty the sheep became our honorary retreat mascot, peeking in through the bathroom window to say hello with her signature baa, always met with laughter.

The week was more than a retreat—it was a gathering of kindred spirits. We arrived as strangers, but left with new friendships, full hearts, and renewed creative energy. The laughter, the light, the learning—it all made this a week we’ll never forget.
